Preventive Maintenance Checklist

These inexpensive and simple preventive checks can help extend your vehicle’s life, ensure safe operation, and benefit the environment.

1. Always read the owner's manual

Maintenance requirements vary depending on the manufacturer. Still, a good rule of thumb is to change oil filters regularly—every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.

2. Check all fluids.

Essential vehicle fluids include power steering, windshield washer solvent, transmission, brake, and antifreeze. These fluids play a vital role in the performance of your vehicle.

3. Check tires.

Under-inflated tires can lead to fuel efficiency. This is the least expensive form of preventive and safety maintenance and should be done once a month.

4. Keep the engine tuned.

A restricted fuel injector or malfunctioning spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 30%.

5. Ensure proper chassis lubrication.

This step can help extend the life of the moving components of your vehicle’s suspension system.

6. Check all battery posts and cables.

Check battery posts and cables for rust and clean them if necessary. Also, the battery fluid should be inspected and filled if it’s low unless it’s a maintenance-free battery.

7. Inspect the lighting system.

Have your vehicle’s lighting system, including turn signals, headlights, and brake and taillights, routinely checked.

8. Check windshield washer blades.

Inspect windshield washer blades for tears, windshield contact, and cracks. Replace them every year or once you notice streaking, whichever comes first.

9. Inspect engine belts.

Worn belts will affect the engine’s performance. Look for cracks and missing sections or segments.

10. Check the air filtration system.

Check air filters for clogging or damage every other oil change. They ensure that your vehicle is performing at its peak condition.
